Iran nuclear accord not ideal, but best to stick with it

The relationship between Europe and the United States should endure differences such as the diplomatic dispute about Iran's nuclear program, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Wednesday.

"This agreement is anything but ideal, but Iran complies, according to the IAEA, with its obligations under this deal". "It's not right to cancel this agreement in this situation now", she said.

Merkel said in a speech to a labor union congress in Berlin that President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from the 2015 agreement marked "a shift in German-American, in European-American relations". "However, transatlantic relations have to overcome the difference in approaches in these very days, first of all, against the backdrop of the United States withdrawal from the treaty with Iran", she added.

Merkel said the Europeans aren't "blind" to threats posed by Iran's activities in Syria to Israel, for example.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), known as the deal on Iran's nuclear program, was signed between Iran and six worldwide mediators (the United Kingdom, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, and France) on July 14, 2015.

Merkel described the deal as "everything other than ideal", but argued that worldwide nuclear authorities said Iran was sticking to its commitments. On January 16, 2016, the parties to the deal announced beginning of its implementation.

Major European powers have sought to keep Iran in a landmark global nuclear agreement after President Donald Trump pulled the USA out of the pact and promised tough economic sanctions against Tehran.
