Ireland-Pakistan Test Revives World Cup Memories

Only Test between Pakistan and Ireland will start at Malahide today

When Ireland become the 11th nation to play Test cricket against Pakistan at Dublin's Malahide ground on Friday it will be the culmination of a journey that started almost three hundred years ago.

After the five-day game, Pakistan play a two-Test series against England starting on 24 May and three limited-overs matches in Scotland. "The start of an incredible journey and a day when the rest of the world sat up and took notice of us as a cricketing nation".

Though Ireland would have to face well experienced and competitive Pakistan in their first very Test match but unlike ODIs and T20Is, Pakistan haven't been up to the mark in Test Cricket recently.

We will be bringing you the live updates of the match.

The Test match between Ireland and Pakistan is taking place at The Village in Dublin.

Earlier this month, Cricket Ireland chief executive Warren Deutrom told the42.ie this match would "probably cost us around 1million euros" - a figure they will not recoup in terms of ticketing and hospitality.

The seasoned administrator, however, added: "The new FTP that will become operative from 2019 has noted fixtures between Pakistan and Ireland".

Ireland's Tim Murtagh's tally of 712 first-class wickets is the most by a player before making Test debut for the national team. "I think it just culminates with us being the lucky ones to take the pitch in this first Test".

"We know how big an occasion it will be and what Test cricket means to every nation", said Porterfield.

"We have already decided, we will play the same team that played against Northamptonshire", said Sarfraz.

"We've mentioned it amongst the squad, it would be pretty remiss if we didn't talk about everything that's gone before us".

That journey was also taken by Ed Joyce and Boyd Rankin, both of whom are now back in Ireland's Test squad.Concerns remain that the "golden generation" of Irish cricketers are ageing - six of the 14-strong squad are well into their 30s - and that there is a lack of depth behind them. No nation has won their first Test since Australia beat England in Melbourne 141 years ago - I fancy a crack at that for starters. From here on, more people will pick up the game and more kids will play the game as well.
