Ireland Votes To Overturn Abortion Ban by a Landslide - Lauretta Brown

Exit polls by the RTÉ are projecting 69.4 percent of citizens voted on May 25 against keeping the Eighth Amendment, which recognizes the equal right to life of the mother and the unborn child, in the Republic of Ireland's constitution, while 30.6 percent voted to keep it, according to the BBC.

After the vote Friday and exit polls showing overwhelming support for overturning the abortion ban, anti-abortion advocates showed their concern on social media.

Exit polls from the Irish Times and broadcaster RTE suggested the Irish people have voted by almost 70 percent to repeal the Eighth Amendment.

After official results began to be announced on Saturday, politicians on both sides agreed that the referendum had passed by a large margin.

"What we've seen today is the culmination of a quiet revolution that has been taking place in Ireland for the past 10 or 20 years", Mr. Varadkar told RTE, Ireland's public broadcaster.

The "Yes" campaign was backed by Ireland's Indian origin Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

One of Ireland's leading anti-abortion groups says the abortion referendum result is a "tragedy of historic proportions" in a statement that all but admits defeat in the historic vote. "I hope the people of Ireland will remember the fate of our daughter Savita on the day of the referendum and vote Yes, so that what happened to us won't happen to any families".

If the partial results hold up, the referendum would likely end the need for thousands of Irish women to travel overseas - mostly to neighboring Britain - for abortions they can't get at home. "That would be wrong".

Emotional pro choice campaigners singing at Dublin Castle awaiting the formal announcement that Ireland has repealed the constitutional amendment that all but bans abortion in the state. "And they are going to change now", a tearful Mellet said at the Royal Dublin Society, where the count took place throughout the day.

"It's mad that there would have been people flying in to vote and a number of women in that airport waiting to leave to go and have an abortion", said art director Aoife Murray, 27, who said the referendum outcome left her in tears of relief.

Abortion rights groups in Ireland are claiming victory as official results show voters have repealed a constitutional ban on abortions.

By late afternoon, thousands of supporters had gathered in Dublin Castle, where a festive atmosphere was unfolding among a crowd of all ages. "Ireland now has the opportunity to be a beacon to the world in terms of respect for people who can get pregnant". Donegal, in the northwest of the country, is the only county in Ireland where Tally men and women think the "no" vote might narrowly prevail.??

His government proposes allowing abortion in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy and between 12 and 24 weeks in exceptional circumstances.

A crisis pregnancy for Mellet in 2011 became an important step in the fight against Ireland's constitutional amendment that bans abortion in nearly all circumstances.

The support for lifting the ban highlights the liberalization of traditionally Catholic Ireland, marking the diminishing influence of the Church hierarchy and a desire to align Irish secular laws with the other countries of Europe.
