The company stated: "With more than 1.8 billion global monthly users, YouTube charts is the new go-to destination to see what's popular, what's rising and trending both locally and globally on YouTube".
The new music service was allegedly going to combine the best features of YouTube's pre-existing music service, but with Google Play Music.
However that was not the case, or at least maybe not yet.
For the time being, nothing will happen to Google Play Music, even as YouTube Music's premium option gets its beloved features and massive library.
According to a survey carried out by the Korea Internet Corporations Association as part of its report on smartphone usage, 75.4 percent of respondents said that their smartphone application of choice to play music was YouTube. In other words, it doesn't sound like they're just slapping a label and a price tag on the existing YouTube content you know and love - it'll be that stuff along with the usual amenities of a streaming music service.
You can find and install YouTube Music on the Google Play Store, but you might not be able to actually use it yet. What do you think of the new features? To access the full package, you can subscribe to Music Premium for $9.99 per month. It's not their concern that the subscription tier is included, because YouTube is under the pump from record companies who are so enraged that it's paying them and their artists so little that they're lobbying governments to compel YouTube to increase pay-outs. So YouTube needs to count on its points of difference - particularly the "exclusive" user-generated content - to make attempt #4 a success. While those companies are pumping several billion dollars each into premium programming and rich talent deals, sources say the budget for originals has not expanded meaningfully from the high nine-figures it spent past year despite the recent success of more high-profile projects like Cobra Kai. You also get special features like ad-free videos, offline video downloads, and the ability the play YouTube videos in the background on your phone.
Apple Music might be all-in on premium subscriptions, but YouTube Music will instead offer a Spotify-like model, letting users choose between free and paid versions of the service.
Google also said you will eventually be able to purchase songs in YouTube Music, though the songs would presumably be from Google Play. Yet another contender in the music streaming industry has stepped up to the plate.
As previously stated, the plan is for YouTube Music to replace Google Play Music sometime in 2019. That's unclear. Maybe it's just to gradually ease subscribers over to the new app and experience without annoying anyone with sudden shifts.
