Just Take a tour of This new Rollsroyce $325000 SUV

This approach to life demands a motor auto that can go-anywhere in ultimate luxury and style - Rolls-Royce style. And in a first for a Rolls, there's all-wheel drive and an all-wheel-steering system - so all that weight can move quickly on the streets of Beverly Hills and the dunes of Namibia with equal aplomb.

During the First World War, Silver Ghost chassis, completely standard except for heavy-duty springs and shorter final-drive ratios, were fitted with four tons of armoured body and Vickers machine-gun turret to create the world's first successful armoured fighting vehicles. The ability to drive through water almost two feet deep is not usually one of them.

While being the first SUV from the brand, the Cullinan is immediately identifiable as a Rolls-Royce by its hulking pantheon grille, long bonnet, square headlights, "Spirit of Ecstasy" hood ornament, and thick, sloping D-pillars, while 22-inch alloy wheels add to its imposing stance.

The Cullinan wasn't built in a vacuum, says Rolls Royce; there had been requests from customers around the world to build "the Rolls-Royce of SUVs", mostly from wealthy young entrepreneurs, heavily into the "experience economy" who want to be able to take the road less travelled, to the places that more conventional Rolls-Royce owners never see, in the old-school luxury that is the brand's trademark.

We've got up close and personal with the first SUV from Goodwood.

. This two-box layout is noisy (because your luggage is rattling around in the extended cabin) has poor acoustics, and is hard to air condition effectively.

But the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan, just unveiled in London, can do that.

"The Clasp" tailgate is a two-section unit and features a pair of picnic seats while the main highlight being deployable glass partition that isolates the cabin from luggage compartment and emphasises the quietness and maintain optimum cabin temperature. When the seats are folded down, there is a staggering 21 cubic feet of cargo space. So, the company put extra attention on the back passenger seats. Because Rolls Royce wanted to give the Cullinan string bottom-end torque, they have tuned the V12 to produce all of its torque from as low as 1,600rpm.

Consumers who forego fold-down rear seats can get pleasure from champagne or a glass of whiskey as a substitute.

Combined with the double-wishbone front and five-link rear suspension, 540mm wading depth and "Everywhere" off-road traction control system, the Cullinan is expected to become the most capable Rolls yet.

The notion of four-wheeling in Rolls-Royce has returned thanks to the world's seemingly insatiable appetite for SUVs. The idea of an ultra luxurious SUV from Rolls-Royce materialised simply because the customers asked for it.

For drivers, the Cullinan is loaded with night vision (that includes a "nighttime wildlife" setting), an alertness assistant for when you are exhausted, a four-camera parking system with panoramic view, Wi-fi and entertainment systems.

And finally, the doors wrap around under the sills, so no matter how muddy the Cullinan gets on the way there, you can always get out without dirtying your trouser legs.

The Rolls-Royce Cullinan has officially entered the unstoppable SUV market and it's the company's first all-wheel-drive vehicle.
