Killer nanny set to be sentenced

A NY nanny convicted of murdering two children she was trusted to care for was sentenced on Monday to life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Kevin Krim, the father of the children Ortega murdered, 6-year-old Lucia "Lulu" Krim and 2-year-old Leo Krim, gave an emotional impact statement, criticizing Ortega's family for lying about her background so she could get a job.

Ortega was hired by the children's' parents, Marina and Kevin Krim, in 2010, when Marina became pregnant with the couple's third child, Leo, according to evidence presented during Ortega's trial.

"I'm very sorry, but I hope that no one goes through what I have gone through", she said, her remarks in Spanish translated into English for the benefit of the New York State Supreme Court.

Kevin Krim eviscerated Ortega for not pleading guilty and forcing the case into a courtroom.

"We miss hearing them call out my name and run to hug me when I got home from work".

"I just wanted to wake up from this nightmare that I knew wasn't a nightmare".

The defense countered that Ms. Ortega suffered from a chronic mental illness and was experiencing a psychotic and dissociative episode when she killed the children.

Moments earlier, Ortega sobbed as she expressed remorse for the first time for the killings, asking for forgiveness from God and the children's parents but standing by her defence that she "did not feel well".

"We could not find a strongly credible proof that the defendant was not aware and able to recognize what was going on", Curtis said. "Her plan that day was to kill the Krim children and to kill herself", Groves said in her opening statements.

Her lawyer had unsuccessfully argued that her client claimed to have been "touched by the devil" when she ruthlessly killed the kids and should therefore be found not guilty by reason of insanity. Kim said that during the investigation, neither the babysitter nor her family showed no regret over the death of children. The two children had been stabbed multiple times with a kitchen knife, reports The New York Times. "She had aged a lot - like seven years in a few months".

Prosecutors said Ortega knew what she was doing and understood "every stab, every slash" as she slaughtered the children. Krim frantically tried to reach Ortega, who had worked for the family for about two years.

Their family grew by two after the murders when they welcomed sons Felix and Linus and they launched a foundation in honor of Lulu and Leo.
