KKR, KXIP Register Second Highest Match Total in Indore Run-fest

IPL 2018 Playoffs

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) set the Indian Premier League (IPL) ablaze on Saturday with a demolition of Kings XI Punjab in Indore. But there's only that much one man can do, Rahul's stunning 29-ball 66 was brought to an end by Sunil Narine and that effectively ended the chase.

Kings XI Punjab now occupy the third spot and victory in next couple of games, will see them make it to the play-offs.

With 12 points from 10 games, KXIP are in a tricky situation. Before this match, all IPL matches at this venue this season have been won by the chasing team.

Barbadian fast bowler Javon Searles got in on the act on his IPL debut, carting the final delivery of the innings-the first ball he faced-for six over wide long on. It was Andrew Tye at it yet again, as the Aussie bowler has been the lone wicket-taker in this match so far, with all the three wickets. On both occassions, the ball went to the fine leg boundary. Narine was severe to Barinder Sran (x/xx) in the 11th over, hitting him for two sixes and a four.

MC Dream XI: KL Rahul (wk), C Gayle, R Uthappa, D Karthik, N Rana, S Narine, R Ashwin, M Rahman, A Tye, K Yadav and P Chawla.

Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana and Dinesh Karthik are the proper batsmen that have done it for KKR in the past but a lot has also depended on Sunil Narine's impetus at the top- his little but affective cameos.

Axar Patel, who has had modest returns with both bat and ball, was slated to bat at six and was followed by the captain himself at seven.

Tye took Russell's wicket to break the quickfire partnership as Karthik also fell to Sran but the damage was already done. The run-fest at Indore meant that 459 runs were scored in 40 overs during this match.

The Kings XI started well enough but lost Chris Gayle (21) in the last over of the powerplay the first of three Russell (3/41) scalps in the space of two overs that saw the home side slip to 79 for 3.

Kolkata moved to fourth, behind Punjab on net run-rate. Aaron Finch entered and stabilised the innings before he returned to the dugout for 34 runs.

Ashwin produced some fireworks with a brisk 22-ball knock, but Kings XI were made to pay for a poor display in the field.

While playing for Royal Challengers Bangalore, KL Rahul was one of the vital cogs in their line-up but was never considered to be the mainstream batsman, courtesy the presence of players like Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and big-hitter Chris Gayle.

Earlier, Delhi rode some power packed batting by Rishabh Pant and talented teenager Abhishek Sharma to post a challenging total of 181/4. Bowling was hard on the wicket and the hot weather added further misery to the bowlers.

Chahal got rid of Jason Roy - the other Delhi opener - in his next over with a sharply incoming delivery that totally bamboozled the England batsman before going on to disturb the stumps. However, he came back to bowl one more over but couldn't continue.
