Korea to hold ceremony May 23-25 over dismantling nuclear test site

U.S. officials offer economic aid security assurances if North Korea eliminates nuclear program

The Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will dismantle the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site, in Kilju county, province of North Hamgyong, on May 23-25, KCNA news agency reported today.

The findings by the scientists at the University of Science and Technology of China may shed new light on North Korean President Kim Jong Un's announcement that his country was ceasing its testing program ahead of planned summit meetings with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump. "Thank you, a very smart and gracious gesture", he tweeted.

In the identical announcement, North Korea invited journalists from the U.S., South Korea, China, Britain and Russian Federation to witness the occasion.

Trump and Kim Jong Un will hold talks in Singapore on June 12, the first-ever meeting between sitting U.S. president and North Korean leader. Now he has pledged to destroy them.

Pompeo spoke to reporters at the State Department following his return from a trip to Pyongyang to negotiate with the North Korean leader and retrieve three Americans held by the regime. From there, journalists will be transported by train to the test site.

Pompeo and other United States officials have repeatedly said they are seeking North Korea's permanent verifiable denuclearization, while North Korean officials have said that they have already achieved their nuclear objectives. The North has been vowing to pursue nuclear development unless Washington removes its 28,500 troops from South Korea and the nuclear umbrella defending South Korea and Japan.

The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong Un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th. However analysts say the plan would not signify a cloth step towards full denuclearization.

However there was no mention of allowing foreign experts access to the site in Saturday's statement from North Korea. Trump said in a Twitter posting.

The nuclear facility was hidden in Mount Mantap and suffered multiple landslides following the bomb tests. In 2008, worldwide media were allowed to broadcast the destruction of a cooling tower at a nuclear reactor as part of an agreement to shutter North Korean nuclear facilities in exchange for $400 million in aid.
