Lars von Trier's new film prompts major walkouts at Cannes

Lars von Trier has never shied away from controversy, and his new film certainly delivered it: The House That Jack Built earned the highest level of ire and disgust seen at Cannes Film Festival this year. "It's disgusting", one woman said on her way out", he tweeted. The film marked Lars' return to the French movie event, seven years after he was banned for comments he made about Nazism. But von Trier makes it clear that he is actually a doofus. 'I think he did some wrong things, yes, absolutely, but I can see him sitting in his bunker in the end'. There are several graphic scenes of misogynistic torture and mutilation in The House That Jack Built - although I've seen a lot worse in supposedly mainstream U.S. thrillers - but I suspect that more people will be put off by the lengthy seminars than they will by the sadism and gore.

Despite the use of his usual sarcasm and satire tones, the director made it clear that he was planning for the film to be his most "brutal" yet.

IFC Films is set to release "Jack" in USA theaters in the fall.

Likewise, other critics went onto note that the film - which graphically portrays the mutilation of women and children - felt "like a suicide note,", along with being deemed by The Guardian as "pretentious" and "pathetic". The feature is set during the 1970s and follows the killer through the process of conducting five murders that shape his "coming of age" experience. And guess what, the reactions to his latest piece of provocation, the gruesome serial killer drama The House That Jack Built, did not disappoint. "You kill art by imposing your moral rules on it!" he rants at his interlocutor Verge (Bruno Ganz), who at this point we still only know by the croak of his voice in the dark. He views each murder as an artwork in itself, even though his dysfunction gives him problems in the outside world.

The film premiered at Cannes today and apparently theater-goers just weren't having it. Cannes audiences are known for being, let's say passionate, prone to booing and standing ovations, but the social media reports out of The House That Jack Built describe a next-level sea of walkouts.

The movie's first trailer was released back in April.

The House That Jack Built does not yet have a United Kingdom release date.
