Leo makes history as Leinster clinch European Champions cup

Scrum-half Teddy Iribaren and Teddy Thomas are will be key players for Racing 92 on Saturday especially with doubts over Leinster’s Luke Mc Grath raising the possibility of James Lowe being ruled out

The Irishmen were already red-hot, odds-on favourites as the breaking news filtered through the San Mamés and there was further woe for the Top 14 side when starting fly-half Pat Lambie suffered an ankle injury after just three minutes.

Their anguish was soothed slightly due to a penalty resulting from a Garry Ringrose high tackle in the ensuing passage of play, and Iribaren sent it spiraling through the posts to give his side the lead.

We couldn't get going in the game.

It completes a dream season for the former Cooley Kickhams GAA player who was also part of Ireland's Six Nations Grand Slam in the Spring.

But Racing's heroic defence in the face of Leinster's increasing dominance of possession held firm and when Sexton opted to run a kickable penalty, hooker Camille Chat was in place to pluck the ball from Leavy's arms at a ruck to win a penalty and the Parisians cleared their lines.

Isa Nacewa landed the
match-winning penalty in the 78th minute, but Leo Cullen's men had to survive a frantic finish, at the end of which Racing replacement
fly-half Remi Tales pushed a
drop-goal effort wide.

This time, Sexton made no mistake and booted his second penalty to again equalise the scores at 6-6 going into half-time.

"It means a huge amount to me, my family and friends - they are the ones that all stood by me in my tough times after the World Cup", Lancaster said after helping Leinster to win Europe's premier club competition for the first time since 2012.

Iribaren nailed his third penalty five minutes into the second period as Racing tested the Irish defence.

Leinster were making most of the attacking surges and they went in level for the endeavour when Leone Nakarawa was penalised for a deliberate intercept and Sexton made it 6-6.

Leinster had not started well at all, though they defended much better than Munster had managed in the opening 20 minutes of their semi-final, when Racing took a 21-0 lead.

Offside in midfield and Nacewa stepped up to, once again, draw his Irish side level.

With 10 mintes left Iribaren slotted a penalty over from the corner to take a three point lead but Leinster came straight back earned a penalty with Nacewa taking over kicking duties, and the captain made no mistake.
