Maharashtra: Violence over water in Aurangabad, 1 killed, 25 injured

Aurangabad clashes

"Some anti-social elements indulged in setting ablaze shops and vehicles in the locality", Mr Bharambe told the media. According to the police, a feud on Friday took the form of a violent clash between the two communities.

Several police personnel were also injured as the night wore on. While the police have imposed curfew in certain parts of the city, Section 144 of the CrPC, which prohibits the assembly of more than four persons in an area, was also invoked. "However, everything is under control now", said the acting Aurangabad Commissioner of Police Milind Bharambe on Saturday, remarking that normalcy had largely been restored across the city.

As a precautionary move, authorities have suspended mobile internet services in the city, news agency ANI reported.

The clashes erupted in on Friday after water connection to a religious place of one particular community was reportedly disconnected. This panicked the locals forcing them to down their shutters.

Speaking on the issue, state Home Minister appealed to "maintain peace and urged to not believe in rumours".

Meanwhile, the administration has placed heavy police deployment in the old city. He also asserted that two people have lost their lives and several have been injured.

However, it is not clear what exactly triggered the clashes between the two communities. DCP (Zone-I) Vinayak Dhakne was quoted as saying in the report, "We have deployed heavy bandobast across the city and riot control police has been put to action".

The worst-hit areas were Shahganj, Nawabpura, Rajabazaar and Angribaug which continued to remain calm but tense. "The other died in police firing", he said, adding that additional forces have been rushed to Aurangabad from Jalna and other neighbouring areas. Prohibitory orders were subsequently imposed in the affected areas.
