Memories of hunger cloud North Korean refugee's hopes for Trump-Kim summit

The president announced the details in a tweet, in which he said: "The highly anticipated meeting between Kim Jong-un and myself will take place in Singapore on June 12th".

He and Kim "will both try to make it a very special moment for World Peace!" he said of the summit later on Twitter.

Kim Hak Song was also associated with Pyongyang University of Science and Technology and was detained in North Korea in May 2017.

Mr Trump and first lady Melania met the three at an air base early yesterday.

Pompeo said he had "good, substantive" conversations with Kim in Pyongyang in what was his second meeting with the North Korea leader in less that six weeks, and believed both sides understood the ultimate goal of the summit.

"It can be a great thing for North Korea, South Korea and Japan", Trump added.

The talks, which are expected to last one day, are set to focus on North Korea's nuclear and ballistic weapons programmes.

Citing Victoria Coates, a member of the National Security Council, who spoke at Thursday's White House press briefing, Global Times said that the USA has not set any presuppositions for the historic meeting.

They issued a joint statement on Wednesday thanking Trump saying, "We would like to express our deep appreciation to the U.S. government, President Trump, Secretary Pompeo, and the United States people for bringing us home".

Singapore was selected ahead of other locations - such as Mongolia and the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea - because it is seen as a neutral space, with both the United States and Pyongyang having embassies there.

With the final details in place, the meeting will become the first ever meeting between a sitting USA president and North Korean leader.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official newspaper of North Korea's Workers' Party, published images of the meeting between Kim and Pompeo and on their front page extensively. "I really think he wants to do something", the president said. Also, good meeting with Kim Jong Un.

Kang said the global community will not ease or lift sanctions on North Korea until the world sees visible and meaningful action by Pyongyang toward denuclearization.

"You're never certain exactly what you're going to get into when you're dealing with certain governments that you don't always have a friendly relationship with", she said.

We very much hope to see further steps, more concrete steps towards denuclearisation being produced at the US-North Korea summit.
