New Jersey school bus collision kills student, teacher

Police have responded to a serious accident involving a school bus and a dump truck in Mount Olive Township in Morris County, New Jersey, according to the township's mayor and a verified tweet from New Jersey State Police. Some of the victims crawled out of the emergency exit in the back and an escape hatch on the roof.

More than 40 others were injured, some critically, and were taken to local hospitals, Murphy told reporters.

"I heard a scraping sound and we toppled over the highway", said Theo Ancevski, 11, who was on the crashed bus and was treated for cuts and scrapes.

Faltings said the front of the dump truck appeared to have been sheared off and the school bus was "ripped off its frame" after hitting a guard rail and flipping over.

"A lot of people (inside the bus) were screaming and they were like, hanging from their seat belts", he added.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said one adult and one student were killed.

The names of the student and teacher killed have not been disclosed.

43 other people were injured after the bus collided with a dump truck and slid off the road.

The front end of the red dump truck was mangled in the wreck, which took place about 80 kilometres west of NY.

The bus had entered westbound Interstate 80 from southbound US Highway 206, police said.

Crews loaded the wrecked bus onto a flat-bed truck on Thursday night.

Forty-five people, including 38 students, were on the bus at the time.

Thuy Nguyen, a nurse from Paramus, was leaving the school with her eighth-grade son who was back at the school taking a standardized test and not in the bus.

"It's a horrific scene", he said. She said she rushed to the school after hearing the news.

"My heart just dropped".

"It's like nothing you've ever seen before", he said.

Robinson said the district was cancelling school trips for the rest of the year. Messages left with the company weren't returned. Mendez's rate was 37.9 per cent, according to FMCSA.

The National Transportation Safety Board said via Twitter that it was "gathering information" on the crash.
