NZ bowler Mitchell McClenaghan keeps Mumbai Indians' IPL hopes alive

After all, the Mumbai Indians was defending a target at Wankhede Stadium against a unsafe Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) outfit. As Mumbai Indians travels to the national capital for its last league game, the bowler and the team would be hoping for him to repeat his heroics against Rishabh Pant and Co.

The Kings XI captain termed it as a "terrible" day. "KL has done exceptionally well throughout, he's the billion-dollar guy for us right now, and he has hardly missed a ball throughout the tournament". The result set up a mad scramble over the last few days of the regular season. Mumbai have to win both their remaining two matches to keep their chances alive for advancing to the play-offs. Barring his match-winning knock against Royal Challengers Bangalore, Rohit has failed to live up to the expectations this season.

It meets Chennai Super Kings in Pune on Sunday. "Coming out and bowling at hard times to a batsman who's set, that's what we require from him".

But Bumrah bowled a superb 19th over as he outfoxed Rahul with a slower delivery and the Punjab opener holed out at long-off after hitting 10 fours and three sixes.

Mumbai: Kieron Pollard made an eventful return to the playing XI of Mumbai Indians by smashing his first half century of IPL11 in their penultimate match against Kings XI Punjab at Wankhede Stadium here on Wednesday. Once again, the victor of the toss elected to bowl, so the Mumbai Indians were put in to bat first.

MI got off to a flying start, reaching 57-1 after five overs but they lost three wickets in quick succession, including two off successive balls, against the pace bowling of Andrew Tye (4-16) before Pollard (50 off 23 balls) and Krunal Pandya (32 off 23 balls) resurrected the stuttering innings.

Pollard's Windies and Trinidad and Tobago teammate, Evin Lewis, fell cheaply for nine in the fourth over with the score on 37, bowled by Australian seamer Andrew Tye (4-16), as the hosts slipped to 71 for four in the ninth over. After a cautious start, Krunal stuck two consecutive sixes and a four in the 12th over off Marcus Stonis, while Pollard followed it up with two sixes and as many fours in the next two overs. One-down Aaron Finch had scored a 35-ball 46, but none of the other batsman managed to give enough support to Rahul in the steep chase. In the bowling department, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik and left-arm pacer Mitchell McClenaghan will have to bowl accurately to get rid of the likes of the in-form Lokesh Rahul and Chris Gayle.

Ashwin, commenting on the loss, said: "I'm pretty blank at this point of time". We were in the chase all along, it was a professional batting performance, " Ashwin said. "It looked like it would be a clinical romp for us, but Bumrah bowled really well at the death, and proved himself once again at the death".
