Pakistan collapse gives Ireland hope of remarkable Test victory

14 May 2018 Kevin O'Brien of Ireland celebrates after scoring a century during day four of the International Cricket Test match between Ireland and Pakistan at Malahide in Co. Dublin

Kevin O'Brien wrote a fresh chapter in cricket's record books by becoming the first Ireland batsman to score a Test century as the hosts turned their debut in the format against Pakistan upside down at Malahide on Monday.

Pakistan were 52 for three, needing a further 108 runs to reach their victory target of 160, at lunch at Malahide, with Ireland requiring seven more wickets to add another glorious chapter to the country's cricketing history.

Ireland´s Kevin O´Brien celebrates his century during play on day four of Ireland´s inaugural test match against Pakistan.

Pakistan's subsequent wobble left the match fascinatingly poised, but Imam and Babar restored order and the chase was completed before tea, allowing Pakistan to look ahead to facing England, while Ireland reflect on a promising first venture into the Test arena. He was back on the field before the interval but did not bowl again in Monday's first session.

Pakistan bowling coach Azhar Mahmood suggested after stumps on Sunday that Amir's lengthy time away from the game allied to the fact he had been involved in all three worldwide formats-Tests, one-dayers and Twenty20s-since coming back had taken a toll on the swing bowler.

The tourists might have already won this match, however, had they not dropped both Ireland openers, Ed Joyce and skipper Porterfield, in single figures off Amir on Sunday.

Imam ran a double to fittingly guide Pakistan to victory with five wickets still intact.

It took just four deliveries as Azhar Ali, who had been dancing down the wicket in a bid to put the Middlesex bowler out of his rhythm, nicked off to first slip where Paul Stirling took the catch.

Best known for hitting the fastest-ever World Cup hundred, off 50 balls, against England at Bangalore in 2011, Kevin O'Brien made Ireland's maiden Test memorable with his hundred.

"Obviously they bring on their strike bowler, I was hoping there was one more over from Shadab (Khan) because I was fairly comfortable against him".

However, that partnership was broken up by Amir, who claimed his 100th Test wicket when Wilson edged to first slip.

"It's a new-ball pitch and one or two are starting to keep low as we head towards the end so if we can bat on for another hour and a half, get the lead up to 170 and then nip a couple out early on then you never know".
