Peak blockchain: HTC's Exodus phone is all about cryptocurrency

HTC is creating an Android phone that's powered by blockchain

Meanwhile, HTC Vive creator Phil Chen have been quoted as saying that the company may consider cryptocurrency as a means of payment for the upcoming multiple blockchain-powered phone.

HTC has not shared any release date or price of the phone but it has been now listed on its website for bookings. While the Taiwanese company has consolidated much of its mobile offerings in recent years, it announced today at the Consensus 2018 blockchain conference in NY that its upcoming Exodus handset is embracing everyone's favorite tech buzzword. The phone named "Exodus" will host a universal wallet and inbuilt secure hardware for cryptocurrencies and applications powered by distributed ledger technology. It is also unknown if the device will be retailed in territories outside of the US.

According to Chen, "Through Exodus, we are excited to be supporting underlying protocols such as Bitcoin, Lightning Networks, Ethereum, Dfinity, and more".

HTC's yet to announce pricing for its Exodus phone, but when it does go on sale, customers will be able to purchase it using, you guessed it, cryptocurrency. Chen's new title is going to be "decentralized chief officer". We would like to support the entire blockchain ecosystem, and in the next few months well be announcing many more exciting partnerships together.

In addition to cryptocurrency manipulation, blockchain is touted for its ability to offer both better security and user experience by incorporating cold wallet storage - offline cryptocurrency storage - directly into the phone. That price and the release date, however, have yet to be revealed. Sirin Labs is coming out with a $1,000 blockchain-powered phone in October called the Finney.

Huawei is also reportedly considering the technology for one of its future devices.

While HTC's phone isn't available yet, it's rumoured that the company may sell the phone in exchange for cryptocurrency. Among other features, they'd allow users on a network to trade crypto without any additional fees.
