Peru captain Guerrero to miss World Cup due to drugs ban

Peru's forward Paolo Guerrero

Peru's preparation for the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup [VIDEO] suffered a major hitch after their captain Paolo Guerrero lost an appeal for a failed doping test. Guerrero is facing a World Cup ban as a result.

Peruvian striker Paolo Guerrero is still analyzing legal options after a doping ban ruled him out of the World Cup.

Guerrero was initially banned for one year in December after testing positive for cocaine metabolite benzoylecgonine after his country's 0-0 draw in their World Cup qualifier against Argentina in Buenos Aires on October 6.

It has now been extended to January after the CAS upheld an appeal by the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Guerrero, who argued he must have ingested the substance in contaminated tea, himself gave an impassioned speech on his official Facebook page in response to the ruling, proclaiming his innocence and claiming he's been robbed of a World Cup. FIFPro says a 14-month ban barring the 34-year-old Guerrero from his World Cup debut is "unfair and disproportionate".

The court said its judging panel "also accepted that he did not attempt to enhance his performance by ingesting the prohibited substance".

Both the Player and WADA filed appeals at the CAS.

"What can't be understood is how they can give me a sanction of 14 months, take away my dream which was play a World Cup, without any justification or argument that made sense to me or even you guys".

Guerrero had played two games for his Brazilian club Flamengo, scoring in Sunday's 3-2 defeat against Chapecoense in the Brazilian championship, between the end of his original ban and the CAS verdict on Monday. I feel that my dream, first of playing soccer, and second, to play in the World Cup after 36 years, I feel like I've lost it.

Bolivia fielded an ineligible player in a 2-0 win over Peru, and that result was overturned to a 3-0 loss by default.

After the match, Guerrero said: "There is no reason for me to be suspended, I did nothing wrong and I trust the court to make the right decision". Without the three extra points, Peru would have fallen below Chile and Paraguay in the standings and out of contention.
