Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Tainted Eggs Causes a Dozen More Illnesses

What You Need to Know About the Massive Egg Recall

A growing number of people are becoming sick from the salmonella outbreak that has primarily been impacting states along the East Coast, including New Jersey.

Despite the pastoral name, Rose Acre Farms has facilities in seven states and is America's second-largest egg producer, after its rival Cal-Maine Foods. The eggs came from Rose Acre's Hyde County Farm in North Carolina.

After learning that all of the people who became ill ate eggs or egg dishes before the onset of illness, the FDA was able to trace back the source of some of the eggs to the Rose Acre Farms' Hyde County farm.

Initially 22 illnesses were reported leading to the recall of contaminated eggs by Rose Acre Farms in IN last month, the Huffington Post reported, but the number of cases has since climbed to 35, with almost a dozen being hospitalized for complications related to the infections.

PREVIOUS STORY: An Indiana-based farm is voluntarily recalling 206,749,248 eggs over fears of a potential Salmonella Braenderup contamination, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. The FDA recommends that Americans throw out any of the possibly contaminated eggs, and has a list of possibly contaminated packages which can be found here.

If your eggs are on the list, CDC warns you not to eat them, and to either discard them immediately or return to the place of purchase for a refund.

Twenty-two illnesses have been reported so far.

They are sold under brand names such as Great Value, Country Daybreak, Coburn Farms and Crystal Farms.

The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days, and most people recover without treatment.

Salmonella Braenderup can cause fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In 2010, a salmonella outbreak led to the massive recall of more than 1 billion eggs from Iowa farms.
