School district looks to cut spending by $3.5 Million in 2019-20

Education Superintendent Christina Kishimoto shaka with HSTA president Corey Rosenlee outside the senate after the senate passed a key vote today to ask voters to decide this fall whether the statehould be empowered to impose a surcharge on residential

For some districts this year, the toughest question was not whether to remain within their caps - that was a given - but whether to remain well below those maximum tax limits as a signal to local residents that they understood the strain imposed by property taxes.

The Tioga Central School District's budget, which was also detailed by district officials earlier this month, features a tax increase as well - albeit a minute one - of 0.38 percent, which is the state tax cap for the district.

The three closures are expected to save between $2.5 to $3 million total in the overall budget, according to Clark.

Madison School Board members quashed a proposal Monday that could have allowed the board president to block other members from requesting information about the school district they are elected to govern. Three of the seats are for three-year terms. Seeking re-election are trustee Robert Thomann, of 16 Neighborhood Drive; James Mooney, of 6 Redwood Road; and Raymond Maclary, of 7 Willow Lane. "We have no business closing any schools right now, but especially a school with some of the highest numbers of low SES (socio-economic status) and minority students in the district".

More than half of homeowners in Nassau County and almost one-third in Suffolk pay $10,000 or more in property taxes, compared with a national rate of 4.4 percent, according to Attom Data Solutions, a California-based real-estate information company.

We know it is asking a lot for people to come out three days in one week, but the board wants to have sufficient time individually with each candidate. The candidates include incumbents Amy Mayo and Brian Judycki and challenger John Stewart.

Voters will also decide on a proposition to donate a small parcel of unused land at School Hill Road and Fourth Street in High Falls to the town of Marbletown.

The creation of a six member board Inter-local Board that would have the authority to increase spending of the initial $2.1 million dollars by up to 5% per year.

Voting will be from 2 to 8 p.m.at the Quogue School.

With final approval of the budget, about $97 million would be in the general fund.

Several board members had expressed serious concerns going into Monday's meeting about the proposed policy's impact on how they do their jobs and the public's access to information about the school district.

Voting will be from 2 to 8 p.m.at the Wainscott School.

Votes can be cast between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m., in the music room of the intermediate school on Leland Lane.
