Seven Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Awards

Four Virginia Tech teams receive NCAA Public Recognition Award

The NCAA recognized Duke and UNC for having 11 and 10 sports teams respectively among the top 10 percent nationally in Academic Progress Rate (APR).

This is the 13th year that Academic Progress Rate (APR) data has been collected for Division I schools. The 13 Notre Dame programs honored ranks four behind the highest figure for recognized Irish sports-the 17 received in 2011, 2012 and 2015.

Five Canisius programs recognized were men's cross country, golf, men's swimming and diving, men's track and field and rowing.

The men's golf team, under the direction of head coach Dave Pezzino, has been honored all 13 years that the April program has existed. "Our student-athletes' educations are our top priority and this honor would not be possible without the resources available to our team and the commitment of the Athletic Department staff to their success".

The Arkansas Gymnastics program was honored with an NCAA Public Recognition Award for the fourth time.

The aggregate 2016-17 Academic Progress Rate data for all NCAA Division I institutions will be announced later this month. Women's golf has earned the award each of its first four seasons of existence.

The University of Arkansas has earned a public recognition award in 12 of the 13 years since the program was initiated. The APR accounts for academic eligibility, retention and graduation at an institution and provides a clear picture of the academic culture in each sport. Nine teams earned a 100 percent GSR in the NCAA's 2017 report.

Among those teams were UNC's basketball team, which received a ideal 1,000 April score, and Duke's football team. One point is for being academically eligible at the end of a semester, and the other is for returning to school or graduating at the start of the next semester.

Clemson is the only school in the nation to earn recognition in baseball, men's basketball and football, and the only school in the ACC to be recognized for rowing. Penn State's 31 NCAA titles since 1992-93 lead all Big Ten Conference institutions.
