Sherpa Kami Rita Sets Record with 22nd Successful Climb of Mount Everest

Two Nepalese Sherpas, a man and a woman, on Wednesday set new world records for most ascents the world's highest peak, Mount Everest.

The 48-year-old Sherpa guide from Nepal has climbed the 29,035-foot peak almost every year since starting at 24 years old.

Kami made his first ascent of Everest in 1994 when he was 24 years old.

While Lhakpa Sherpa was climbing to break her own record on Wednesday morning, other climbers were dealing with oxygen failures.

He and his team started climbing last night from South Col (Nepal Side) and reached the summit at around 8:30 am today, according to Pemba Sherpa of Seven Summit Treks, which organised the record expedition.

Another 180 climbers are preparing to summit Everest from its north side in Tibet, according to the China Tibet Mountaineering Association.


Mingma Gelu Sherpa, Managing Director at Seven Summit Adventure told THT from the base camp that Lhakpa along with a team led by Alex Abramov made it to the summit at around 5:40 am. Most ascend with at least one guide, doubling the overall number of climbers heading for the top.

Ethnic sherpas, renowned for their endurance and experience at high altitudes, serve as guides for many foreign mountaineers attempting to climb the highest Himalayan peaks. In case there was any doubt about her physical strength, she climbed Everest once when she was two months pregnant, and once only 8 months after having a baby.

Before leaving the Everest base camp, Kami had announced that he intends to climb Everest 25 times.

She moved to America 16 years ago and says she plans to continue climbing, while keeping her job in the supermarket. "They searched in the summit area but they couldn't find his body", Mingma said, adding there was no way Lama could survive three nights exposed on the mountain. Some 26 climbers had to descend to fix their oxygen regulators.

On the Tibet side a team was forced to retreat from just below the summit when 11 of their bottled oxygen systems failed.
