Special teams failures took Capitals' teeth away in Game 3

Game 4 of the Capitals vs.

The public transportation system in Washington, D.C., normally only runs until 11:30 p.m. ET on weeknights, posing a potential problem for fans leaving Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final between the Capitals and Tampa Bay Lightning on Thursday night, which doesn't begin until 8 p.m. ET at Capital One Arena.

This was the first game the Capitals have lost since Nicklas Backstrom left Game 5 against Pittsburgh with an upper-body injury.

The Capitals have a 2-1 advantage in the series after losing to Tampa 4-2 at home on Tuesday night. Before that, Steven Stamkos opened scoring for the Lightning late in the first period after Braden Holtby was called for tripping. The once-underdog Caps head back home leading the series 2-0. He took a feed from Hedman, converting for his 10th career postseason power-play goal-a franchise record. But after getting rolling Tuesday with the pair of power-play goals, the Lightning scored twice more at 5-on-5.

Eller's first penalty led to Tampa Bay's second goal, via Nikita Kucherov.

Lightning coach Jon Cooper said Tuesday that the team would not make any lineup changes for Game 3.

"We know both teams have pretty good special teams, and if we're going to play like that, they're going to use it", said Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who combined with Kuznetsov to put 21 shots on net. They now have to travel to Washington down 2-0 with the Capitals playing some of their best hockey.

The Bruins scored 13 goals in five games against the Lightning in five games of the Eastern Conference Second Round, with seven at even strength and five on the power play.

We remain scoreless with nearly six minutes played in the first period.

Brett Connolly and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for Washington.
