SRO stops school shooter in IL

'Things could have gone much worse': Former student is shot by officer during gunfire exchange at Dixon High School

No students or staff were injured.

Dixon is a city in Northern Illinois, about 100 miles from Chicago.

The shooting unfolded near the school's gym, where students were practicing for graduation, at around 8:00 a.m. local time. Dallas also has children who attend Dixon High School.

Dallas was placed on administrative leave as per protocol, police confirmed. He came face-to-face with the gunman named Matthew Milby who was holding a gun. The last one was in Palmdale, California, on May 11 where one person was injured and a suspect was arrested. His injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. He is expected to recover. They have been going through training on what to do during an active-shooter situation. No students or faculty were hurt in the incident.

Gym teacher Andrew McKay closed the door to the foyer and told the students in the gym to, "Go, go, go". "With shots ringing out through the hallways of the school, he charged toward the suspect and confronted him head on". People were laughing at first, and then pandemonium broke out. Sauk Valley Media received some conflicting information Wednesday. "He went in and faced the problem head-on". She says after she and her classmates heard the shots fired, they were evacuated to Page Park just down the street.

Senior Devin Scott said he was in the gym this morning when he heard what sounded like fireworks. "I feel like Mr. McKay is a hero". The shooter never was able to fire at students.

According to the city of Dixon website, the school resource officer position was started by the Dixon Police Department in 2000 to help prevent school violence. Dallas chased him when he ran outside, trying to shoot a police officer.

"In addition to that, we need to take a look at what happened at the school", he said. Dixon Mayor Liandri Arellano Jr. commended the officer for his actions. She says Dallas is not only a standup officer but a standup man.

It could have been so much worse. He is being held in lieu of $2 million bond.

Counselors were on hand Wednesday evening at the school. "Well, my kid is laying up at the hospital shot".

"He's a community guy, and he's a family guy, and thank god he's the one that's in that school working", she said. "Thank God he don't kill anyone", said Julie Milby, the shooter's mother.

Dixon police believe the suspect acted alone and that there is no further threat to the safety of students or staff, Langloss added.
