The teacher who tackled a shooter at Noblesville West Middle School and swatted the gun away was identified by numerous parents and students as seventh grade science teacher and middle school football coach Jason Seaman. The person in police custody is a male student now enrolled at the middle school.

This is the 17th school shooting this year and fourth of the month. We need to keep risky weapons out of the hands of unsafe people.

The suspect is believed to have acted alone and was taken into custody, he said. He said science teacher Jason Seaman likely averted a catastrophe.

Police have reportedly confirmed that the families of the victims have been notified. We have confidence in Noblesville Schools Superintendent Dr. Beth Niedermeyer and her team, law enforcement, and first responders.

"I got a "Mom, I'm scared" text message and other than that, it was 'come get me at the high school,"' Higgins said.

The family also sad they'd like to thank everyone across the country who prayed for our family today. "We have multiple officers and a command post established at the high school and they are diligently ensuring the safety of the students and the staff".

"I'm really grateful for him to be there because without him I'm not sure if all of us would have made it", Carter Sutherland, 12, said.

The suspect had excused himself from class at Noblesville West Middle School and came back armed with the pistols and opened fire. Southern Illinois tweeted that he was in good condition after surgery.

Noblesville Police Chief Kevin Jowitt said at a press conference Friday afternoon the Hamilton County Communications Center received a call of an active shooter at 9:06 a.m. Friday at the middle school.

Police said on Friday they were investigating the shooter's motive and how he obtained the guns.

"We don't know what happened in the classroom, so I can't make any comments, but we do know what happened in that classroom resolved very quickly", Jowitt said. He said he was conscious after the shooting and spoke with his wife, telling her he was OK.

Jeremy Seaman said his brother was three-sport high school athlete in Mahomet, Illinois.

"Everybody got down and the person right next to me I saw fall down", Sutherland said.

Indiana's Senate Democrats issued a statement in response to Friday's school shooting expressing their condolences to the victims and calling for steps to prevent such shootings, including restrictions on guns.

Noblesville is in a suburb about 25 miles northeast of Indianapolis.
