Supreme Court to examine Centre's Cauvery management scheme today

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A.M. Khanwilkar and D.Y. Chandrachud adjourned the matter till Thursday for further hearing on the Centre's scheme for implementation of the February 16 judgment of the apex court on the allocation of water.

The court had yesterday thrown out the government's appeal for another delay, citing elections in Karnataka, and had ordered that the draft be submitted in 24 hours.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday had directed Centre to make a few modifications to the draft it had submitted on May 14.

The Kerala government, also which is a beneficiary in the scheme, also objected to the Centre's draft, contending it got only 4% of the water but was expected to shell out 15% of the cost towards the Cauvery Management Board (CMB).

The fluid political situation in Karnataka found an echo in the Supreme Court during the hearing on the draft Cauvery Management Scheme when the state sought time till July as the process of government formation was on.

In another tweet, he said, "People of Tamil Nadu are familiar with the BJPs efforts to protect the corrupt ADMK Government, which also incidentally does not enjoy the majority support in the Legislative Assembly".

The court said the Central government would only be issuing administrative directions for implementing the award. "The court can not wait till July as the first release of water from the Cauvery is scheduled in June", Naphade said.

On February 16, the Supreme Court awarded its final verdict on the Cauvery water-sharing dispute, directing the Centre to frame a scheme within 6 weeks of the verdict.

Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have fought over the river for more than a century now.
