Tesla crash that killed 2 teenagers is under NTSB investigation

In a statement late on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the company said it had not yet retrieved the logs from the vehicle but "everything we have found thus far indicated a very high-speed collision and that autopilot was not engaged".

The autopilot, a form of advanced cruise control that has come under scrutiny after two crashes this year, was not engaged when the Model S vehicle drove off the road and hit a concrete wall, catching fire, the company said, although it added that it had not yet seen logs from the crash.

This time, they are mainly focused on "the emergency response in relation to the electric vehicle battery fire" as we find out that batteries from the other crash under investigation reignited days after the accident. "The goal of these investigations is to understand the impact of these emerging transportation technologies when they are part of a transportation accident".

On March 23, a Model X driven by a 38-year-old crashed into a safety barrier on Highway 101 in California, killing the driver and destroying much of the electric SUV. This time a Model S burst into flames after spinning into a wall.

The two investigations add to the growing list of concerns swirling around Tesla and the newest probe comes barely a week after the automaker's CEO Elon Musk came under fire for his handling of a conference call with stock analysts during which he dismissed several questions as "boring".

The federal agency dismissed rumors that the car's Auto Pilot may be at fault. The company issued a recall in those cases to install barriers under the auto to better protect the batteries.

Earlier this month, Tesla and the NTSB got into an open feud over Tesla's release of information from the probe into the Mountain View crash. The agency defended their decision to remove Tesla, citing the company's decision to deliberately violate procedure by prematurely releasing information.

What will the future hold?

Mr O'Neil said that despite the previous dispute, Tesla would be invited to be a party to the investigation of the Fort Lauderdale crash. Tesla plans to fully comply with the investigation and stands behind its vehicle and safety features.

"Our thoughts are with the families and friends affected by this tragedy", the representative said. "We're attempting to set the truth of this episode and offer our full cooperation to community authorities".
