Tesla driver had her hands off wheel before crash

The Tesla's 28-year-old driver suffered a broken right ankle while the driver of the mechanic truck didn't require

Data recovered from a Tesla that was driven at 60 miles per hour into a Unified Fire Authority vehicle stopped at an intersection last Friday confirms the driver had engaged the vehicle's autopilot system, police said Wednesday.

According to the data gathered by Tesla and released by South Jordan Police, the driver took her hands off the car's steering wheel more than a dozen times, and, on two occasions, her hands were off the wheel for more than a minute.

San Francisco: Tesla chief Elon Musk defended self-driving auto technology on Tuesday after reports about the latest crash involving one of the electric carmaker's vehicles. She manually pressed on the brake just before the crash.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has sent its special crash investigations team to the state, after a summary of data from the vehicle involved in the Friday evening crash was released on Wednesday.

The driver, who suffered a broken foot in the accident, has not been identified.

"What's actually unbelievable about this accident is that a Model S hit a fire truck at 60mph and the driver only broke an ankle". "She did not touch the steering wheel for the next 80 seconds until the crash happened; this is consistent with her admission that she was looking at her phone at the time".

Police told FOX 13 that the woman reported she was using the car's autopilot feature at the time of the crash, which happened on Bangerter Highway and 10400 S around 6:30 p.m. that day.

Tesla has released several statements on the accident, including a March 30 blog post that expressed sorrow for the family but defended its technology and pointed responsibility for the crash on the driver.

Police issued the driver a traffic citation for failure to keep proper lookout.

Tesla said that the driver did not heed repeated warnings from the auto to resume control of the vehicle.

Tesla's Autopilot relies on a system of radar, cameras with 360-degree visibility and sensors to detect nearby objects and perform basic functions such as parking and steering.

AEB is "designed to automatically engage the brakes to reduce the impact of an unavoidable frontal collision with another vehicle" and therefore, drivers should never rely on it to always save them from a crash.

This is the most recent investigation by federal regulators into the latest accidents that involve Tesla-made vehicles.

The SCI also collects relevant data like vehicle, occupants, injury mechanisms, roadway, and safety systems, which are all obtained from 100 crashes that they will study annually, according to the NHTSA.

It is at least the second Tesla crash linked to the semi-autonomous Autopilot system being investigated by the government agency since January.

Also in March, an Arizona pedestrian was killed by a self-driving Uber auto with a backup driver behind the wheel. The 2014 Tesla was reportedly traveling at high speed when it hit a wall then caught fire last week, the NTSB said in a release.
