Theresa May phones Iranian president with 'firm commitment' to nuclear deal

The Government insisted it will not allow foreign judges to be part of a domestic process to investigate incidents related to the war

In a meeting on Sunday with Sri Lanka's President Maithripala Sirisena, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani revealed that Iran intends to remain committed to the deal- but only if the remaining signatory countries promise to protect Iran's economy from U.S. sanctions.

Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif arrived in Beijing on Sunday for the first stop of his tour of the remaining members of the nuclear deal.

Sirisena is expected to hold meetings with Rouhani as well as other Iranian officials including Foreign Minister Zarif.

"China is willing to maintain communication and co-ordination with all relevant parties, including Iran, and take an objective, fair and responsible attitude to continue to safeguard the.agreement", Wang said. He added, however, that other Treaty partners - Germany, France, Britain, China and Russian Federation - can still save the agreement and the credibility of global agreements.

The deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), was supported at the time by the US, China, Britain, France, Russia and the European Union.

Specifically, Rouhani claims that if the deal can still be structured in a manner in which its interests are protected, Tehran would be opening to remaining in the agreement, an accord that US President Donald Trump referred to as the "worst deal ever".

Senior cleric Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami said Friday that Europe was "not to be trusted", and the head of the elite military wing, the Revolutionary Guards, General Mohammad Ali Jafari, has also blamed officials for looking "outside rather than looking at domestic potentials" to boost Iran's fragile economy.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, for his part, stressed the need for closer banking interaction to pave the way for broader trade and economic relations.

"America's exit aims to break the Iranian people's resistance, which is not new. but today's problem is not US sanctions, it's that some officials look towards outside rather than looking at domestic potential", said Gen. Mohammad Ali Jafari, commander of the Revolutionary Guard, according to the state news agency IRNA. Trump now plans to introduce fresh sanctions against Iran, which will have a negative impact on United Kingdom businesses operating in the country.

White House National Security Adviser John Bolton said sanctions could be imposed on European companies.
