Three more Ohio E. coli cases linked to lettuce

The CDC said that the last slot of romaine lettuce from the Yuma region distributed in other states was harvested in April and now, the harvesting season has come to an end. Most people recover within a week, but some illnesses can last longer and be more severe.

39 people in California have gotten sick, including 1 who died.

Talk to your doctor if you have symptoms of an E. coli infection and report your illness to your local health department.

The CDC said three more states - Iowa, Nebraska and OR - have been hit by the outbreak, bringing the total number of affected states to 32.

Attorneys Fred Pritzker and Brendan Flaherty represent people sickened with E. coli O157:H7 infections and HUS.

Brendan Flaherty, an attorney who is representing patients in this outbreak, said, "The last reported illness started on May 2, 2018, which is within the 21-day shelf life of the last batch of romaine harvested in the Yuma area". Product labels often do not identify growing regions; so, throw out any romaine lettuce if you're uncertain about where it was grown. There may still be more patients added to this outbreak, since three weeks from April 16 is May 7.

Health officials said Wednesday that it is "unlikely" that any romaine lettuce grown in Yuma is still available as more E. coli cases are being reported nationwide.

"I'm the Mueller of the E. coli outbreak", Marler says.

This investigation is ongoing and health officials will provide more information as it becomes available. More cases may get reported, but the shelf-life of romaine lettuce is not long and no more is being harvested from the affected area. The strain of E. coli, known as O157:H7, produces a Shiga toxin that can affect people seriously, causing diarrhea and vomiting and in severe cases kidney failure.

It is not safe to buy and consume romaine lettuce again.
