Trump offers protection to N Korea in return for denuclearisation

North Korea threatened Wednesday to withdraw from the Jun 12 summit in Singapore if Washington seeks to push Pyongyang into unilaterally giving up its nuclear arsenal.

North Korea's first vice foreign minister Kim Kye Gwan on Wednesday warned the fate of the U.S. summit and relations between the two countries "would be clear" if Washington spoke of a Libya-style denuclearisation for the North.

North Korea's statement Wednesday did not directly criticize Trump, or Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, who has made two trips to the North to lay the groundwork for the summit.

On the planned summit, Mr Trump said: "Nothing has changed on North Korea that we know of. We just can't do it", he said of North Korea, which has been working on missiles capable of hitting the United States.

At South Korean President Moon Jae-in's request, Washington agreed to delay the much larger "Foal Eagle/Key Resolve" drills in the spring because of the North-South diplomacy surrounding February's Winter Olympics in South Korea. -South Korean "Max Thunder" air combat drills, which it said involved USA stealth fighters, B-52 bombers and "nuclear assets".

North Korea engaged in a number of bitter clashes with Bolton when he served in the George W. Bush administration, calling him "human scum" and a "bloodsucker".

National Security Adviser John Bolton explicitly cited "the Libya model of 2003-2004" as a basis for the North Korea talks last month, which drew personal rebuke from the North Korean government on Wednesday. North Korea can't be trusted.

"The Libyan model isn't the model we have at all when we are thinking of North Korea".


As reported by Yonhap news agency, South Korea will push for further high-level inter-Korean talks.

"This with Kim Jong Un would be something where he'd be there. We never said to Gaddafi, "Oh, we're going to give you protection", he said.

"Measures that North Korea has taken to ease tension on the Korean peninsula should be acknowledged", he added.

Mr. Trump as president-elect also said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation was obsolete but backtracked on those comments after taking office, calling North Atlantic Treaty Organisation "no longer obsolete". "And he'll get protections that will be very strong".

Yet, thanks to Trump's threats and refusal to accept a "frozen conflict" on the Korean peninsula, the makings of a real deal are present, if Trump does not make the ideal the enemy of the good.

"We will continue to go ahead and plan the meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un", Ms. Nauert said.

"If history says in the future that the Cold War ended completely through permanent peace on the Korean Peninsula, I believe the April 27 inter-Korean summit and the June 12 North Korea-US summit will be given the biggest credits". "If it doesn't take place that's fine, and if it does take place I think tremendous things can happen".

The United States has demanded the "complete, verifiable, and irreversible" dismantlement of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. It also underscored South Korea's delicate role as an intermediary between the US and North Korea and raised questions over Seoul's claim that Kim has a genuine interest in dealing away his nukes.

His apparent movement toward Pyongyang's position came after two days of unusual restraint from the President, as his top officials tried to decipher Kim's latest move and ultimately concluded the North Korean leader was grandstanding but that the summit would go on.
