U.S. imposes sanctions against Iran central bank governor

The U.S. Treasury Department imposed sanctions Tuesday on Iran's central bank governor and another senior official in the bank for providing support for terrorist activities.

President Trump just last week announced that the us was withdrawing from the "defective" Iran nuclear deal and imposing the "highest level" economic sanctions on the country. "The United States will not permit Iran's increasingly brazen abuse of the worldwide financial system". "The global community must remain vigilant against Iran's deceptive efforts to provide financial support to its terrorist proxies".

British, French and German foreign ministers met in Brussels on Tuesday to try to find a way to save the nuclear deal without the United States, but appeared hard-pressed over how their companies could continue doing business with Iran once Washington begins to reimpose sanctions.

The department said the sanctions would not immediately affect central bank transactions.

Tuesday's action seeks to cut off what the USA called a "critical" banking network for Iran and deny those blacklisted access to the global financial system.

Typically, when the USA punishes individuals with sanctions, it prohibits Americans or U.S. companies from doing business with them. Beginning Aug. 7, the USA will impose sanctions on the purchase or acquisition of US dollar banknotes by Iran's government, the Treasury Department said.

There was no quick remark Tuesday evening from Iranian officers.

President Trump has always been critical of the Obama-era agreement, calling it an "embarrassment" and "one of the worst and most one-sided transactions the United States has ever entered into".

Last week, two days after U.S. President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, the U.S. Treasury imposed sanctions against six individuals and three companies it said were funneling millions of dollars to the IRGC-QF. Habib and the bank are also subject to secondary sanctions.

"Seif has conspired with the IRGC-QF to move millions of dollars through the worldwide financial system in a variety of foreign currencies to allow the IRGC-QF to fund its activities overseas", the U.S. Treasury Department said in a statement. Those funds were then used to "enrich and support the violent and radical agenda of Hezbollah", Treasury said.

Assistant director of the International Department at the Central Bank of Iran Ali Tarzali was also designated for acts supporting the IRGC-QF.

Lebanon's Hezbollah, the powerful Shiite guerrilla force that is also a prominent political player in Lebanon, has long helped carry out Iran's foreign policy objectives in the Arabic-speaking world.

The sanctions had been anticipated to be adopted by extra U.S actions within the coming weeks, because the Trump administration works to dismantle the principle banking conduits exploited by Iran and its Revolutionary Guards to transform Iranian rials into euros or .
