United States diplomat involved in road accident returns home

US diplomat involved in deadly crash leaves Pakistan

Pakistani media identified the diplomat as Col. Joseph Hall, who serves as the U.S. Embassy's military attaché in Pakistan.

Weeks later, a second accident involving a United States diplomat and a motorcyclist also made headlines in the country but resulted only in minor injuries.

Col Hall had initially avoided arrest because of his diplomatic immunity, but a first information report (FIR) regarding the incident had been registered at the Kohsar Police Station. It was added that the local police have handed over all relevant record to the United States officials.

On Saturday, a special aircraft had landed at the Nur Khan Airbase to take Colonel Joseph, but was prevented by immigration authorities.

Dr. Mohammad Faisal, a spokesman for the Foreign Office, had also pointed out that under the articles dealing with diplomatic immunity in the Vienna Convention, the possibility of holding Hall in Pakistan for criminal proceedings was unlikely.

"The US diplomat has been allowed to return to the US in light of the High Court's decision that he had diplomatic immunity", the official said.

Before the announcement, President Donald Trump had complained on Twitter that Pakistan had "given us nothing but lies & deceit" and accused it of providing "safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan".

The United States and Pakistan imposed travel restrictions on each other's diplomats last week as the dispute continued to simmer.

A letter issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to the embassy of the United States said the U.S. diplomatic cargo at Pakistani airports and ports will be strictly treated in accordance with the provisions of Article 27 of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, which does not provide for an exemption from scanning.
