US Mississippi, Florida Declare Emergency Over Subtropical Storm Alberto

Alberto disorganized no threat to local area Alberto remains very disorganized Sunday morning

Alberto is then forecast to track across the eastern Gulf of Mexico tonight through Monday, and approach the northern Gulf Coast in the watch area Monday night.

Because Alberto moved a little eastward Saturday, the Hurricane Center issued a tropical storm watch from Florida's west coast Saturday from Boca Grande to the Anclote River, and extended the watch on the northern Gulf Coast eastward, from Grand Isle, Louisiana to the Aucilla River in Florida.

A Storm Surge Watch is in effect for Crystal River in Florida to the Mouth of the Pearl River in Mississippi. The satellite shows that Alberto is somewhat disorganized, with all of the thunderstorm activity east of the center of circulation.

The storm on Saturday afternoon was last located about 105 km north-northwest of the western tip of Cuba and 315 km southwest of the Dry Tortugas, which is nearly 113 km west of Key West, Florida, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Alberto will move into the Gulf of Mexico later today. A slower northward or north-northeastward motion is expected tonight, followed by a north-northwest turn on Sunday, and this general motion should continue into Tuesday.

According to a statement from the governor, the declaration covers all of the state's 67 counties, which are expected to see torrential rain and flooding after the storm makes landfall this weekend.

In Southern Alabama, Mississippi and the western Florida panhandle there could be as much as one foot of rain. Gradual strengthening is forecast for the next 72 hours. In contrast to a tropical storm or hurricane, where the strongest winds are at the center, a subtropical storm can have the most powerful winds far from the core.

The last time a tropical cyclone was named Alberto was in 2012; it also formed before the season began, on May 19. The National Hurricane Center in Miami said the island's rain totals could reach 10 to 15 inches - and even 25 inches in isolated areas.

Forecasters in Alabama were getting prepared for a "multitude of impacts" from Alberto starting this weekend.

Rain and wind are pushing through South Florida as the storm heads north up to the Gulf coast. This includes the western Florida Panhandle, the Alabama and MS coastline and metro New Orleans.

Monday looks like the rainiest, windiest day with an increasing threat of some tornadoes east of wherever the center ends up. The winds will create rip current dangers and hazardous boating conditions. The highest winds are also now away from the center.

Forecasters stressed that the water will be risky for all levels of swimmers through Tuesday.
