What do you hear, is it Yanny or Laurel?

Yanny or Laurel? A simple looped soundbite with just two syllables has ignited an internet meltdown

"I hear Laurel and everyone is a liar".

But where did it all come from?

"They are two totally different words so I don't understand how people are hearing different things", April Bush said. However, she didn't create the audio track.

Quite honestly, it's strangely similar to the black and blue or gold and white dress debate that took over our news feeds a few years back. Soon everyone from regular Joes to celebs like Ellen DeGeneres and JJ Watt were talking about it (Ellen thought it was Laurel, but Watt was Team Yanny).

By now you've heard the "Laurel recording". Ellen DeGeneres tweeted that everything at her show stopped to see what people heard.

But that audio clip has actually been hiding in plain sight for who knows how long at Vocabulary.com. The listing's for laurel.

Roland Szabo of Georgia was identified by the New York Times as the person who originally uploaded the clip to Reddit. Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan said he'd like "to declare something that is just so obvious: It is laurel and not yanny".

The acoustic frequency associated with Yanny is high, and with Laurel, low. Also, younger and smaller ears are more sensitive to the higher frequencies, so they will have a better chance of hearing "Yanny".

David Alais of the University of Sydney School of Psychology told the Guardian that this clip is an example of perceptually ambiguous stimulus.

"Because it's noisy, your brain is filling in with what it thinks it should be".

"The sound seems to have a mix of some cues for the sounds making up laurel, and also some cues for the sounds making up yanny".
