Whitney Houston was 'sexually abused', film claims

Houston

A new documentary about Whitney Houston, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival Wednesday revealed the allegations about what Whitney faced in her childhood.

Drug addiction loomed large in Houston's life and contributed to her death, but in another gripping moment from the trailer, Reid denied he knew about the singer's struggle, despite working with her throughout the years.

Mary Jones, Houstons aunt, told Macdonald that the superstar confided in her that she had been sexually abused by Warwick, the sister of soul singer Dionne and niece of Houstons mother Cissy Houston.

Directed by Kevin Macdonald (The Last King of Scotland), Whitney is produced by Simon Chinn, Jonathan Chinn, and Lisa Erspamer, and executive produced by Nicole David, Pat Houston, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, Mike Runagall, Zanne Devine, Rosanne Korenberg and Joe Patrick. Dee Dee is said to have struggled with narcotics addition and died in 2008, aged 63. Garland even appeared in the documentary and shared his story.

"There was something very disturbed about her, because she was never comfortable in her own skin..."

Tom Grierson, writing in Screen Daily, wrote: "Whitney is strongest when it connects Houston to the larger history of Black America, illustrating how this glamorous performer grew up in poverty and never entirely escaped the obligation of helping to pull up her underprivileged family members". She seemed kind of asexual in a unusual way.

It also touches on her relationships with former husband Bobby Brown, mother Cissy Houston, longtime friend Robyn Crawford, Paula Abdul, Clive Davis, and her The Bodyguard co-star Kevin Costner. She was a attractive woman, but she was never particularly sexy.

The Warwick family has been contacted for comment. Not necessarily in public, but I don't think that was a secret within the music industry. "I think it's when you see the film, you'll see she obviously played a big part in Whitney's life, but it's not the great key that unlocks who she is".

"There were times when I would look up to God and I'd go, 'Why is this happening to me?'" Whitney says, referring to her fame.
