Will Democrats' Last-Ditch Effort to Save 'Net Neutrality' Succeed?

The FCC announced that its December order, which restored the rules under which the internet flourished for decades, is set to officially take effect on June 11. Barbara Underwood, the acting attorney general for NY, told Reuters that "the repeal of net neutrality would allow internet service providers to put their profits before the consumers they serve and control what we see, do, and say online". Instead, he said that he favored a bill that would "permanently ban blocking, throttling, and paid prioritization by broadband internet providers" through law.

Net neutrality's repeal has stirred passions and controversy, as proponents warn of an impending era of online content being blocked, slowed down or otherwise discriminated against, under the FCC's planned changes.

"On June 11, we will have a framework in place that encourages innovation and investment in our nation's networks so that all Americans, no matter where they live, can have access to better, cheaper, and faster Internet access and the jobs, opportunities, and platform for free expression that it provides", Pai said.

He also said many politicians had sought to "mislead" the public about the repeal's impact.

The new timeline comes as net neutrality advocates make a last ditch effort to undo the repeal.

On Wednesday, Senate Democrats moved to force a vote on a resolution to restore the 2015 rules, and they have 50 Senators lined up in support.

It should be noted that it's not just the FCC and Republicans playing games here - the Democrats have been stretching out their CRA vote for weeks for whatever opaque reasons of their own. "My colleagues and I are forcing a vote to overturn the FCC's decision to repeal net neutrality".

Following Thursday's FCC announcement, Markey wrote on Twitter: "the Senate must act NOW and pass my resolution to save the internet as we know it". He explained that the end of net neutrality would be a disaster for the people of America, as it would affect small businesses and a free flow of ideas.

Senate Democrats are now pushing for a vote on a bill to overturn the decision as soon as next week.

The small businesses, as well as the top-notch websites, have chose to conjoin in a single platform regarding the case of net neutrality.

The bill has a chance to get past the Senate, but will have much difficulty getting through the House, as CNN has stated, that it would "likely be vetoed by President Donald Trump". "They said do what you will with the internet", he said.
