YouTube announces new streaming service, YouTube Music

YouTube announces details of its new streaming service

The service will simply be called YouTube Music.

The new YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music Premium as well for $11.99. Much of that "viewing" is actually music listening, as music videos consistently rank among the most popular clips on YouTube, making it one of the biggest single sources of music listening worldwide.

Google said its YouTube unit will roll out a new music-streaming service, YouTube Music, on May 22. Google plans on expanding the availability of its new music streaming service in the coming weeks to major European countries.

But now YouTube has made a decision to split the service up into YouTube Music and YouTube Premium.

Sadly like YouTube Music, YouTube Premium will not be available in South Africa. This is a key feature, because you won't be able to listen to YouTube Music and do other things on your phone at the same time without it.

Google's current services for music and video overlap a bit... to say the least. Soon, it will be its own service, complete with a new desktop player. It will include the personalized playlists that will be totally based on the user's YouTube's usage pattern and app history.

It's also worth mentioning podcasts which are now available through Google Play Music.

The service will have an ad-supported version, similar to Spotify. However, note that those three features only apply to music content.

The YouTube Red subscription was priced at $10/month and now this is set to change. Google indicates that additional expansion will come later this year and beyond. It's basically all of the music you find on YouTube, with videos and everything, better put together than the current YouTube Music. So if you remember the sound of a song but can't remember it was "Young Folks" by "Peter Bjorn And John", you can type in something like: "hipster song with the whistling" or even a few lines from the song.

There's a lot of questions to be answered here about how this affect their Google Play Music streaming service (and their cloud locker), as well as Family Plan users signed up for YouTube Red and we're going to have to wait for Google to answer them when they launch the service next week.

The launch of YouTube Music comes after a flurry of activity at the streaming giant, which on Wednesday revealed it would provide artist credits to more than half a billion videos on its platform, and which last week announced changes to several of its global charts, including for top songs, top artists and top music videos.
