YouTube just added songwriter, label and publisher credits to millions of songs

After adding a real time Trending chart for songs last week, YouTube today is beginning to roll out expanded artist, songwriter, label, and publisher credits on music videos.

Now, these credits will natively appear on both music videos and user-uploaded content that features recorded songs.

MBW understands that the new credits will affect the presentation of millions of songs, and that details of other tracks will be continually added to YouTube as part of an evolving process.

YouTube has announced "Music in this video", a new menu that shows song credits on videos with music.

MBW reports that the new credits include not only songwriting data but also label and publisher information. The launch of "Music in this video" follows Spotify's addition of songwriter credits to its service in February.

"This move by YouTube is an important step forward to deliver that goal and one which Sony/ATV welcomes".

For fan-uploaded content, YouTube is also using this section to link to the official version of a music video, as well as the Official Artist Channel for improved discovery. That being the case, the implementation of "Music in this Video" is still a net positive for all those concerned.

Björn Ulvaeus of Abba noted, "The songwriter is every bit as important as the artist and deserves recognition". It has been a longstanding issue that platforms like YouTube and Spotify have had to deal with.

John called songwriters the "heart and the soul of songs, so it's wonderful seeing them get the credit they deserve".

"Despite how much and often they are used, online streaming platforms lack in providing creator credibility apart from only the artist, continuing the pattern of keeping the "back-of-house" creators in the shadows behind the artists" spotlight. "There is so much more we can do to establish a better situation for music creators and this is great step forward", of the initiative moving forward.
