9-year-old girl sent to rehab for 'Fortnite' addiction

Nine-year-old in rehab after becoming addicted to Fortnite video game

This news isn't brand new either, because back in March one mum warned people about the dangers of the game, claiming it "changed" her 10-year-old son.

The girl's father told the reporter that when he first confronted her about her Fortnite addition, Carol was very aggressive.

A nine-year-old girl is in rehab after becoming so addicted to a computer game she wet herself in order to keep playing.

The girl's mother told the Sunday People newspaper: "We had no idea, when we let her play the game, of the addictive nature or the impact it could have on her mental health".

The woman said that she and her husband chose to seek help when they've discovered Carol sitting on a urine-soaked cushion.

Neglected to go to the toilet because she could not bear to leave the screen.

She added: "This is a serious issue which is destroying our little girl's life and someone needs to step in to ban it before it becomes an epidemic". Before she and her husband intervened, they were summoned to the school by Carol's teacher.

Once a keen sportswoman, the youngster starting saying she was too exhausted to do gym or ballet classes and avoided going to church on Sunday with her family. The girl also used her parents' credit card to purchase Fortnite's microtransactions, spending about £50 each month.

Although the game is free to play, developers have raked in cash from in-game purchases as players try to boost their performance. This apparently made her so furious that she hit her father in the face. She had wet herself because she didn't want to go to the bathroom in the middle of the game.

Steve Pope, the addictions counselor who has been treating Carol and Richard's daughter, said that parents have been reaching out to him about their children, who are as young as 8, and their Fortnite addictions.

"I urge every parent out there to know what this game can do, how it sucks young children in and could ruin lives", the girl's mother said.

Video games, like many other forms of entertainment, can result in an unhealthy obsession or addiction.

The game's Battle Royale mode is especially popular and sees 100 players fighting it out to the death in a last man standing contest.

And professional gamers are making up to £500,000 (NZ$953,000) a month from live-streaming their matches for addicted children to watch.

The highly addictive game is available across PS4, Xbox One, iOS, Mac and Microsoft Windows, reported The Washington Post.
