Aeon Flux Revived By MTV With Live-Action Reboot

Teen Wolf showrunner Jeff Davis is on board to pen the script and will executive produce alongside The Walking Dead's Gale Anne Hurd. Chung's distorted figures performing acrobatic stunts in skimpy leather outfits, freaky futuristic architecture, zero dialogue, and ending every short by killing the protagonist in some brutal way, was unlike anything that was on the air before or largely since, and, after Charlize Theron and director Karyn Kusama tried to make it a film franchise in 2005, the cartoon is coming back to live action. This series is just the latest MTV show from the past to be revived for a reboot, with the network now developing revivals of Jersey Shore, Yo MTV Raps, Total Request Live and The Real World.

Back in the '90s, MTV, having some late-night airtime to fill, made a decision to do it with Liquid Television, a showcase of weird indie animation. Those shorts were followed up with five additional short-form animated episodes in 1992, and in 1995, MTV ordered a 10-episode season of half-hour episodes as its own stand-alone series. Animator Peter Chung created the original series. She goes on covert missions to infiltrate the neighboring country of Bregna, which is lead by Trevor Goodchild, who serves as both her nemesis and lover.

The first live-action Aeon Flux project was released in 2005. Produced by MTV Films and directed by Karyn Kusama, the film had an impressive cast that included Theron and Frances McDormand, but couldn't eke out either a critical or commercial victory.

And that's not to mention this return to TV comes with some high genre pedigree at the top of the creative team.

Industry insiders have indicated that MTV is preparing to open a studio to "help further monetize its library" as its parent company Viacom breathes new life into its brands.

Hopefully, this live-action TV series revival will have better luck. Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, the time is ripe for a reboot.
