Ainsley Maitland-Niles signs new Arsenal contract

Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Arsenal's latest rising star Ainsley Maitland-Niles has committed his future to the club by signing a new long-term deal, the club announced. He is set to wear jersey No 15 next season rather than No 30 he had when he became second-youngest Champions League debutant in December 2014 at the age of 17.

A successful loan spell with Championship club Ipswich Town then followed in the 2015/16 season, and after making 30 appearances for the Tractor Boys during an impressive campaign at Portman Road, the England youth global returned to Arsenal with vital experience.

With Emery now at the helm, England Under 21 global Maitland-Niles has been handed a new long-term contract.

He is the first member of the Arsenal first-team to extend his contract since Unai Emery took over as head coach, an indication the new boss views the England youth global as part of his plans.

Maitland-Niles was singled out for special praise during Emery's interview for the job, according to chief executive Ivan Gazidis, and the 20-year-old admits he is excited at the Spaniard's vision for the team.

Arsenal closed their statement writing: "Congratulations on your new contract Ainsley".

'I think it's brilliant to hear from him and it gives me a load of confidence.

'It feels fantastic knowing that I'm going to be a part of the squad, and a big part of the squad.

"We had a little meeting".

Although the length of the contract extension has not yet been revealed, Arsenal had confirmed the England youth global had been assigned a new shirt number, changing from the number 30 shirt to number 15. [Emery] said that he wants all of his players to work hard and I'm no stranger to doing that.

'I think [the high-pressing game] suits me a lot, too.
