Arrest of gunman ends hostage siege in central Paris

French police

The standoff began around 4:00 pm, with BFM television reporting that the man had entered the offices of a start-up company on the Rue des Petites Ecuries, a gritty area of the bustling 10th arrondissement.

The gunman is reportedly holding the people hostage inside an office. However, France Bleu radio said that the perpetrator was holding at least three people. However, police have said there was no indication that the incident was terrorism-related, according to CNN.

More than a dozen heavily-armed police officers, firefighters and rescue workers were stationed outside the building where the hostages were being held, located in a crowded neighborhood in the center of the French capital.

The man has asked to be put in contact with the Iranian embassy.

Shocking photos show police decked out in body armour with a local reporter warning of "an armed man".

The hostage-taker also claimed he had an accomplice outside the building with a bomb, according to union official Lefebvre.

Before officers moved in, Lefebvre said a third hostage had been freed. He reportedly struck one man, who managed to escape, but was doused with gasoline.
