Ben Lecomte’s bid to be the first to swim the Pacific Ocean

Ben Lecomte is to swim from Japan to California.

Faced with an epic 9,000-kilometer (5,500-mile) adventure, his bid to become the first swimmer to accomplish the daunting feat begins in Japan and is expected to take more than six months, finishing in San Francisco.

"It is mind over matter", said Lecomte, who is also an architectural consultant based in Austin, Texas when not in the water.

'I am not an Olympic swimmer, but I am an adventurer in the way that I push my limits, ' he added.

"The mental part is much more important than the physical", he told AFP news agency. "You have to make sure you always think about something positive or you always have something to think about", he said, reflecting on the task ahead.

"When you don't have anything to occupy your mind it goes into kind of a spiral, and that's when trouble starts", he says. He will be accompanied throughout the journey by a support boat, where he will rest, eat and sleep before restarting his swim every morning.

Lecomte's two children Max and Anna swam out with him for a few hundred meters before leaving the 50-year-old Frenchman to continue the task of crossing the world's largest ocean.

More than two dozen scientific organisations, medical and oceanographic, will benefit from the data gathered during the expedition. I remember times when we would go to the beach and walk and never see any plastic.

"If we are all aware of it then after it is much easier to take action and to change our behaviour because the solution is in our hands". In the Pacific, the biggest accumulation of plastic smog is about the size of Germany, France, and Britain combined and Lecomte will swim right through it.

But Lecomte will actually be in the water, potential shark bait. He could face sharks, cold temperatures and storms during the swim, CBS reported.

But Lecomte knows the application of science-and a boat stocked with 2.8 tonnes of food-will only get him so far.

Mr Lecomte, who lives in the U.S., has been preparing with hours of open water swimming every day.
