CA chief executive James Sutherland announces resignation

James Sutherland has announced he's quitting as Cricket Australia's chief executive two months after a ball-tampering scandal in South Africa resulted in suspensions for the test captain and vice-captain and the resignation of coach Darren Lehmann. John Buchanan took over in 1999 before Sutherland began as chief executive, was replaced by Tim Nielsen (2007-2011), Mickey Arthur (2011-13) and Lehmann (2013) before Langer was appointed last month.

"In the last 12 months we have laid key foundation stones which have included a new strategy for Australian cricket".

They were all banned from state and global cricket over one of the biggest scandals to engulf the sport, while then-coach Darren Lehmann resigned.

Junior batsman Cameron Bancroft was banned for nine months for his role in the incident.

David Peever, chairman of CA, paid tribute to Sutherland, who he said has been "instrumental" in driving change in the game and making it stronger for future generations.

Sutherland and CA have come under increasing scrutiny, with the acrimonious negotiations over a new pay deal for players and the ball-tampering scandal that erupted on Australia's tour of South Africa early this year. "David and I have been talking about this for two years", Sutherland told reporters. "It will be a privilege and honour to continue to serve the game over the remaining months that I am in office", he said.

"When you work in an issues-rich environment these things (scandals) come from time to time", Sutherland said.

"After almost 20 years at Cricket Australia and 17 years as chief executive, the time is right for me and my family, and I think the time is also right for cricket". "My successor will have a strong and stable platform from which to lead our national strategy and to deliver on our bold aspirations to grow cricket as Australia's favorite sport and a sport for all Australians".

"My overwhelming feeling today is a sense of gratitude".

"I'd like to thank James for his wonderful service to the game", Peever said.

Sutherland was 35 at the time - younger than then-Test captain Steve Waugh - and during his term cricket participation numbers more than tripled to 1.4million.

"James has done an incredible job and has always carried himself with integrity, humility and dignity, apart from knowing the game of cricket inside out".

"The people that I had supporting me through that whole time made a huge difference to the head space I am in now". And just recently, a new domestic broadcast rights deals that will see broader TV coverage and significant increases in revenue flowing into the game.
