Canada will pay for words

Трамп пригрозил расплатой премьеру Канады

In a rare apology by a Trump administration official, top White House trade adviser Peter Navarro on Tuesday walked back his inflammatory statement that there was a "special place in hell" reserved for Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

"Let me correct a mistake I made", Mr Navarro said at a Wall Street Journal conference.

"I own that, that was my mistake, those were my words", he said. Addressing reporters in Singapore ahead of Trump's summit Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, Pompeo said he was "unconcerned" that Trump's treatment of Canada - a close ally - boded poorly for his ability to forge peace with a longtime USA adversary.

After leaving the summit early, Trump tweeted he was pulling US support from a joint statement and he accused Trudeau, the summit's host, of being weak and dishonest during a news conference.

Trump quickly fired back on Twitter, calling Trudeau's comments "very dishonest and weak".

One photo in particular shows Trudeau trying to engage with a sullen Trump.

"I actually like Justin", Trump said.

At his closing press conference, Trudeau called USA steel and aluminum tariffs "insulting" and pledged to proceed with previously announced retaliatory tariffs.

Speaking to CNN today, Trump adviser Larry Kudlow says he personally negotiated with Trudeau during the two-day G7 summit in Quebec's Charlevoix region and insists the United States agreed to the language in the communique in good faith. But the president broadsided his allies after leaving the meeting by disavowing a joint statement the USA had agreed to, criticizing Trudeau and vowing tariffs on automobiles. "Those were my words", Navarro added. "He'll learn, he can't do that", Mr Trump said.

In response to Trump's tweets, the PMO released a statement shortly after that simply read, "The Prime Minister said nothing he hasn't before - both in public, and in private conversations with the President".

The comments dashed hopes that Trump had moved on from what he believed to be was a "dishonest" action by Trudeau. This prompted Trudeau to announce retaliatory measures on USA goods.

"[Trudeau] really kind of stabbed us in the back", Mr Kudlow, the director of the National Economic Council who had accompanied Mr Trump to the G7 summit said on Monday morning on CNN. He learned. That's going to cost a lot of money for the people of Canada. "I think he's good".

Canadian officials have stressed the two countries' extensive trading relationship and pointed out that Canada is the top export destination for 35 USA states and that 9 million jobs in the United States depend on trade with its northern neighbour.

Asked whether he was apologizing, Navarro replied, "Yes, absolutely".

The NAFTA talks have stalled since Trump last month imposed 25 per cent tariffs on steel from Canada, Mexico and the European Union, and 10 per cent tariffs on aluminum.

Trudeau's office responded to Trump's tweet saying "We are focused on everything we accomplished here at the #G7 summit".
