Ewan McGregor to Play Adult Danny Torrance in Doctor Sleep

Ewan McGregor

Per Variety, McGregor is set to star in Doctor Sleep, Warner Bros.' adaptation Stephen King's novel of the same name, the 2013 follow-up to his horror classic The Shining. The outlet notes that author Stephen King has given his blessing to McGregor's casting.

While the idea of a "Shining" sequel may worry horror fans, the source material coming from King himself and the involvement of director Mike Flanagan bode well for the final product.

Yes, Ewan McGregor will be playing adult Danny in the film that Flanagan's go-to producing partner Trevor Macy will produce along with Vertigo Entertainment's Jon Berg. Following the success of New Line's "It", every studio with any sort of King IP under its roof has fast-tracked each property into pre-production.

Dr. Sleep finds an adult Danny struggling with the same alcoholism issues that consumed Jack Torrance, Danny's famously psychotic dad brought vividly to life (and death) by Jack Nicholson.

Retained from childhood is Danny's continued ability to "shine", tuning into an extrasensory gift that both endangered and, ultimately, saved him and his mother Wendy (Shelley Duvall) in the original story. He's become a reflection of his murderous father, with lingering rage and a drinking problem that dulls his pain as well as his "shining" powers.

Ewan McGregor is checking into the Overlook Hotel. He establishes a psychic connection with a young girl who shares his extreme abilities, and who is being targeted by a group with similar abilities.

It remains to be seen if this film will serve as a standalone movie that acknowledges the storyline of The Shining or if it will in fact be a sequel to Stanley Kubrick's 1980 horror classic, which was also distributed by Warner Bros.
