Fernando Alonso Claims Himself to be One of F1’s Finest

Fernando Alonso's 300th Formula One race ended early because of an exhaust failure.

Last week in Detroit, Michigan a McLaren Racing mission of Zak Brown, former Indianapolis 500 victor Gil de Ferran and Fernando Alonso's manager, Luis Garcia Abad, reportedly met with IndyCar leaders to talk about a full-time IndyCar team offensive in 2019. IndyCar team owner Michael Andretti was also in the McLaren pits on Saturday. When asked about his interests in other racing series, and whether he was bored of F1 or not, he said that he still enjoyed being a part of the series.

"We're seriously considering IndyCar, we have been doing due diligence for quite some time", he told reporters in Montreal. Alonso has got the very best out of an under-performing vehicle, but he knows he may probably never win again.

The American continued, "It needs to be commercially viable, something we feel we can be competitive in and fits our brand". It has to tick all those boxes.

The double world champion retired his McLaren for the second race in a row while he had been running in a points-scoring position.

Alonso passes the 300 grand prix mark in Canada this weekend, but next weekend he will tackle Le Mans and he is linked with a full-time Indycar seat for 2019.

If he wins that, his focus will turn Stateside again.

The Triple crown is Indianapolis, Le Mans and, as far as Alonso is concerned, the Monaco Grand Prix, although it was originally held up as the F1 world championship.

"It's obviously the top series in motorsport, and it's where we all dream to come, but it's true that in the last years it is so predictable".

Alonso has not won a race since 2013 and since joining McLaren in 2015 he has been stranded in the midfield, unable to display his talent.

"The Triple Crown is an attractive target because it is so hard to achieve".

"I am probably not the fastest in the race, or in the wet, but I am 9.5 in all areas".

McLaren and Alonso continue to have talks about a new contract and Brown hopes the Spaniard will remain with the team, though he refused to speculate whether that would be with Formula One, IndyCar or both.

Fernando Alonso could only qualify fourteenth on the grid for the Canadian Grand Prix on Saturday and admitted he knew Qualifying was going to be hard for the McLaren F1 Team at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. "I think he is driving better than he ever has".

Widely regarded as one of the finest drivers of his era, Alonso's career has been a lesson in under-achievement as he has won only two drivers' championships and made a sequence of bad decisions in team selection. "He loves Formula 1, he loves World Endurance and Daytona, so hopefully we will keep Fernando in the McLaren environment in some way, shape or form".
