Final preparations begin for Trump-Kim high-stakes summit

Kim And Company Arrive In Singapore Via A Procession Of Chinese And North Korean Jets (Updated)

The eyes of the world upon them, President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un headed on Tuesday into their historic summit balancing the elusive promise of peace against the specter of a growing nuclear threat.

"We will not be surprised by any scenario", said the official.

UN Security Council Resolution 2270 forbids loaning aircraft, ships and crew to North Korea, but Beijing apparently had USA approval.

He and Trump are set to meet Tuesday morning in the first summit of its kind between a leader of North Korea and a sitting US president. "If diplomacy does not move in the right direction.those measures will increase".

While North Korea spoke of establishing a new "permanent peace-keeping mechanism" and its state-run news agency hailed a "new era" in relations with the US, Trump tweeted about how pleased he was to be in Singapore.

It is an extraordinary turnaround from the rhetoric of previous year, when Trump threatened the North with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged United States dotard".

Lobster bisque, beef tenderloin and ice cream were on the lunch menu, and there was also an early birthday cake for Trump, who turns 72 on Thursday. There was also no sign of his sister, Kim Yo Jong, who has accompanied him to Singapore.

The two leaders have had an extraordinary up-and-down relationship over the past 18 months.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said that the president, secretary of state, White House chief of staff and national security adviser have arrived in Singapore for the 12 June summit. Kim thanked Singapore for organising the summit as if it was "their own family affair". Others complained about the traffic jams in downtown Singapore.

Lee said the cost was worthwhile.

"It is our contribution to an worldwide endeavour which is in our profound interest", he told reporters on Sunday.

Authorities imposed tight security around the summit venue and the luxury hotels where the leaders were to stay - including installing extra pot plants outside Kim's accommodation to obstruct reporters' views.

Trump is set to meet with Lee on Monday. Their hotels are cordoned off with heavy security.

One dispatch by the Korean Central News Agency said North Korea and the USA would exchange "wide-ranging and profound views" on establishing new relations, building a "permanent and durable peace-keeping mechanism", achieving denuclearization and "other issues of mutual concern, as required by the changed era".

Part of the interest in Tuesday's summit is simply because Kim has had limited appearances on the world stage.
