First Lady Melania Trump makes trip to visit border detention facilities

FLOTUS Melania Trump flew to see detained child migrants wearing a coat emblazoned with the phrase 'I really don't care, do u?'

Her staff did not announce the Texas trip in advance and required news organizations travelling with her to agree not to publish any information until she arrived.

"It's a jacket", her spokeswoman, Stephanie Grisham, said in a statement to Business Insider.

While there may not be a "hidden message" in her jacket, Trump knew that wearing the outfit would prompt a reaction. "After today's important visit to Texas, I hope this isn't what the media is going to choose to focus on", she said.

Mayors from around the nation and across the political aisle converged on a border town Thursday morning to protest President Donald Trump's family separation policy.

Children at the facility welcomed Trump with a large paper American flag they'd signed.

The first lady intends to inform the President on what she sees. The first lady is traveling to Texas to see first hand the condition and treatment that children taken from their families at the border were receiving from the federal government.

The order specifies that migrants entering the U.S. with children will not be kept together if there's a fear for the child's welfare.

Mrs. Trump's plane landed in McAllen in a heavy downpour.

Ahead of a visit with victims of Hurricane Harvey a year ago, photos of the first lady heading to the airport in stiletto heels drew ire on social media.

On Thursday, Melania Trump made a surprise visit to the Texas border near Mexico. Trump had previously claimed it was up to Congress to fix the issue.

Heather Reynolds, the nonprofit's director, says the three are among 12 immigrant children at the shelter who were separated from their parents under a Trump administration "zero tolerance" policy.

Melania Trump has had several private conversations with her husband, the official said, pushing the President to do all he can stop children from being taken from their parents upon illegal entry into this country.

I give her the benefit of the doubt on compassion - but if she chose to wear this without thinking it was pretty tone deaf.

According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, 2,342 children were separated from their families at the U.S. -Mexico border from May 5 through June 9 under the new initiative.
