Four illnesses due to West Nile Virus reported in California

Anyone who becomes ill after exposure to mosquitoes should contact their health care provider. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as of January 9, 2018, a total of 47 states and the District of Columbia reported West Nile virus infections in people, birds, or mosquitoes in 2017.

Nesemeier says fever body aches, a stiff neck, or a rash can be general symptoms that someone wouldn't typically associate with West Nile.

The virus is transmitted to humans and animals through a mosquito bite.

Monitoring for West Nile virus in IL includes laboratory tests for mosquito batches, dead crows, blue jays, robins and other perching birds, as well as testing sick horses and humans with West Nile virus-like symptoms.

Last year, 63 counties in IL reported a West Nile virus positive batch, bird and/or human case.

Annual larviciding is once again underway to reduce the risk of West Nile virus (WNV) in Oakville, Burlington, Milton, and Halton Hills. Mosquitoes acquire the virus from biting infected birds. People over 50 years of age and those with chronic medical problems are at higher risk of severe disease, according to Jeffrey Gunzenhauser, M.D., M.P.H., an L.A. County health officer.

Vector control officials have netted mosquito samples in eastern and western county areas where the virus was present.

The first case of West Nile in Denton was reported in 2002.

The mosquitoes have been known to carry several viruses including Zika.

Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active, especially between dusk and dawn.

Consider wearing long-sleeved shirts and long trousers when you are outdoors, particularly at these times and when in areas where more mosquitoes are present.

 Make sure that your doors and windows have tight-fitting screens in good fix to keep mosquitoes out of your home.

Use an approved insect repellent, such as one containing DEET or Icaridin.

If water is stored in rain barrels or other containers for longer than a week, cover all openings with tight fitting lids or 1/16-inch fine mesh screen. Citizens are encouraged to deal with mosquitoes on private property and eliminate stagnant water - a breeding ground for mosquitos - which is an important aspect of mosquito prevention.
